Last week's show at the Handlebar in Pensacola was great fun. We played with Curt's band Boat (photo also by John) and they totally rocked it. They even played "Barrytown" by the Dan. Whoa! Canard had a warm reception, mainly thanks to Mr. Ito's entourage.

Canard sez:
"Over the weekend the old Canards took a trip over to the Handlebar to hand them some fine rock. We delivered. It was a great show. P-cola 2 Tally 0. The last time I had played there was in 1998 with Newsboy Legion/Invaders from a Forbidden Planet on the 'rigoddamndiculous' tour. That was our first show on that tour debacle and probably our best.

Saturday night was a great one. We played with Curt's band BOAT who also had a good set. good crowd, lots of PBR and we had a swank hotel room too overlooking the bay from the 12th floor.

The old handlebar was a charming place but kind of worn down. The new place was really pretty nice. It pretty much ruled."

January 25, 2004

Wait just a minizzle! Canard had a blast last week at the radio station and at the acoustic show (setlist here). This week we're off to P'choadla.

January 14, 2004

Happy New Year! Lots of activity this month! Listen to Canard on V89's Hootenanny program on Monday, January 19 at 10:00 pm EST (We'll be debuting a brand new tune called "Annual Leave"). Also, come check out a solo acoustic performance by Canard on Friday, January 23 at Club Downunder. The following week (January 31) Canard and the boys travel west to Pensacola for a show with Boat and Pat Puckett at the legendary Handlebar. Huzzah!

December 19, 2003- Happy Hanukkah!

Finally! Photos from the acoustic gig (Quicktime slideshow) in late September- only two months late! Thanks to Michael Wheeler for the photos!!

December 11, 2003

Hi Ya canard here! We have finally released our first full length cd A Pleasure To Be Around (pdf press release) and we're damn proud of it. A year or so in the making and lots of hard work as well. We tried to keep this one concise and on the money the best we could. Although it probably will not be distributed until the new year sometime, you can get it here by paying thru paypal. Just send it to this address: mcoleman@nettally.com and we'll get you one out immediately. 10 bucks postpaid or you can get it at Vinyl Fever. pretty soon we'll have a lot of the older related discography up for sale for cheap too. bands that Brent and I had toiled in before such as Bacon Ray, Frankenfinger and Newsboy Legion. Lots of 7" singles and cd's. Oh and if you wanna support us give V-89 a call and request us. Hopefully soon you'll be able to hear us on some other stations too.

We want to thank everyone who came to the release party on Nov. 21 at the Down under. Special thanks to Believe In Toledo and Cream Abdul Babar who both rocked the crowd hard. it was a flattering honor to share the stage with them.

In my humble opinion I thought the show was not our best but pretty good. We tried out a lot of new things especially in the lighting department. hopefully our stage show will expand in the future to include more fog and less beer. We were in a celebratory mood that night. let's just say that we received a few too many party favors! Still it was pretty rocking and fun was had by all. marc didn't have to pee during our whole set! Thanks again for your support! have a happy and safe holiday season!

Oh, check out this Quicktime Slideshow from the release show (photos by Michael Wheeler).

Canard and the boys have been woodshedding for the upcoming CD Release show November 21 at FSU's Club Downunder. Our good friends and national monsters of rock Cream Adbul Babar will be headlining the show, we'll be in the middle slot, and local sensations Believe in Toledo will get things started.

The CD is called A Pleasure To Be Around, and we can't wait for folks to hear it. It should be back from the plant real soon.

In the meantime, we've been offered a plum spot opening for Blues Explosion axe-man Judah Bauer's group and Fat Possum Recording Artist 20 Miles. Awriight!!! This one is at the Beta Bar on Sunday October 26, and should be (God willing) an early show. C'mon out and catch the show- there'll be saints and sinners, losers and winners, all kinds of people you might want to know...

Oh yeah, one more thing. The AAJ split 7-inch What the Scientist Saw, featuring the Canard smash hit "Ocean Würm," is out now on delicious green vinyl! It's available through AAJ Records and Vinyl Fever for a ridiculously low price. Get you some!

August 25, 2003

Canard and company are heading to Atlanta this weekend to master A Pleasure To Be Around, the upcoming full-length release, as well as Self Portrait, the covers record we recorded last winter. Rodney Mills is mastering this stuff for us—he's done several records for Tally folks lately, not to mention his work for Skynyrd and countless others. Needless to say, we're psyched. Bonus: We get to crash at Matt's new crib.

Also, Canard and Mr. Ito will be playing an acoustic show on Friday, September 26 at Club Downunder to mark the debut of the Tallahassee Makes Music collection and exhibit at the Leon County Public Library. It's great to be able to help celebrate this cool project and honor the spirit of local musicians from the past and present. Checkitout checkitout checkitout!!

July 30, 2003

What a Scientist SawThe Canard track "Ocean Würm" (RealAudio sample)will be featured on What the Scientist Saw, an upcoming 4 band compilation 7" record from AAJ Records. The other bands on this fine release are Invaders From a Forbidden Planet, Solution Science Systems, and Bugs Eat Books.

Ocean Würm
Lost Bird and the Shrimps
Be Free
Live in Spain
Arctic Silence
Fat Bass
There Goes Superwoman
A Shovel
Spider Island II
Copper Kettle
By a Stalker
Gazpacho
The Hand

Unearthed! Photos from last fall's gig at Down Below (Quicktime slideshow)

July 9, 2003

The Alaskan Pirate and his Salty Seamen (Brent plays drums) join Xelophane Uziq for a benefit show for pals Alain Rodgers (Euphoria Tattoos) and J Peace from Cream Abdul Babar, both of whom have looming medical bills. C'mon out to the Beta Bar this Friday, July 11—have a good time, and help these fine fellows out.

Meanwhile, Canard and Co. continue working on the tracks mentioned in last week's entry. We're fast-tracking this stuff, we swear! Will post something when it becomes available.

July 2, 2003

Canard and the boys return to the studio tonight to record drum tracks for the following songs:

Fat Bass
Arctic Silence
Lost Bird and the Shrimps
Live in Spain
A Shovel
Spider Island II: The Mutation

We're looking to record these tunes before the summer is over and have a full-length release ready for fall.

Today's Manager Specials

1) As an appetizer, fresh shrimp sautéed in garlic butter and a mixed
romaine salad.

2) The Self Portrait sessions finally came to a close this past week.
Everything turned out magical, and it's only waiting for mastering and
artwork. Expect a release in the early fall, and expect the unexpected.

3) There is a split 7" release in the works with the Amazing Lee Grutman. The Top of the Pops single 'Ocean Wurm' will compose Canard's side o' vinyl.

4) 16 oz. grilled Porterhouse, smothered in a cream cheese/gorgonzola/green
onion mixture. This will be served with nothing and you'll like it.

5) Canard is back in the studio recording some new tracks after the fine
nuptials of Magnetic Marc, purveyor of the live bass and geddy. All good
vibrations can be sent his way via this website. And magic.

6) Look for Canard to come out of our corner swinging in the fall, with lots
of live dates and possibly some dead dates.

7) And for dessert, Razzberry Parfait. Alternate layers of heavy whipped
cream, sugar free raspberry jello, and raspberries. Serve chilled.

April 18, 2003

We had a great time at the Beta Bar last night. We opened the show—unbelievably, we started playing at 9:45!! I don't think anyone knew the show would be starting so early, so we played for a relatively small but enthusiastic audience. Marc enjoyed playing THE GEDDY for the first time on stage.

Next up was Xelophane Uziq, Will Dolce's latest project, and they were fantastic. Sorta like Television meets Codeine, slow and jazzy and poignant. Excellent!

Mike Watt and the Secondmen were awesome once again. Check out their tour diary to see what they thought of the show. Canard and the boys got a bit of a snootful and ended up owing the Cow Haus—oops, Beta Bar—$10 for beer after we got paid...

Here's the setlist from last night's show:

NOCTURNAL DECISION
FAVORITE SPOT
LOST BIRD AND THE SHRIMPS
STRANGE KIND OF DOORWAY
ARCTIC SILENCE
OCEAN WURM
SPIDER ISLAND 2
FAT BASS

April 11, 2003

Next Show Thursday April 17 with Mike Watt at the Beta Bar!!

Here's the tentative tracklisting for Self Portrait, in alphabetical order by original artist:

"Tight Connection To My Heart" - Bob Dylan
"Shade Tree (Fix-It Man)" - Merle Haggard
"You Sexy Thing" - Hot Chocolate
"Honky Tonk Downstairs" - George Jones
"Let's Straighten It Out" - Latimore
"Clang Of The Yankee Reaper" - Van Dyke Parks
"Zurich Is Stained" - Pavement
"Rubberneckin'"- Elvis Presley
"Flaming Star"- Elvis Presley
"I Believe In You" - Don Williams
"Good Ole Boys Like Me" - Don Williams
"Wonderin'"- Neil Young
"Looking For A Love"- Neil Young

We also recorded two Canard originals during these sessions, which may or may not appear on Self Portrait: "Truck Stop Gravy" and "By A Stalker."

We'll probably also include two older recordings: "Cold Cold Beer" by Ted Daffan and "Carmelita" by Warren Zevon.

Interestingly, we're playing none of these songs at next week's show. Canard has been listening to a lot of King Crimson and Marc has been practicing up for his debut performance on THE GEDDY, so look for a strange, not-too-long, but psychedelic set on Thursday.

April 2, 2003

We've wrapped recording on Self Portrait and should have rough mixes soon. Can't wait for you to hear it.

Check out tallahasseeshows.com, a great new web site devoted to local music.

March 26, 2003

We are excited to announce that we'll be playing with the legendary Mike Watt on April 17th at the Beta Bar. Hell yeah!! Also, we're just about to wrap up the Self Portrait sessions. We've had a blast recording this stuff- will post a tracklist soon. Peace on Earth.

March 5, 2003

Please bear with us as we continue to update the site. We're in the process of moving files over to the new server, so some things might not be available. In the meantime, our friend Jordan passed on photos from when Canard opened for Spoon a few months back, and Brent created a quicktime movie using cheesy iphoto effects. Enjoy!

February 18, 2003

Welcome to the new-look Canard site. Please bear with us while Brent learns CSS and converts the rest of the site over! Many thanks to Kelly Shane of the kick-ass Solution Science Systems for his tireless work on behalf of Canard, and to www.bluerobot.com and Merlin Mann for their kind assistance. The site will be in varying states of disrepair/transition for the near future.

We've begun vocal tracks for the Self Portrait material and so far we're pleased as punch with the results. We'll be busy in the studio for the next six to eight weeks so updates will probably be minimal here.

February 5, 2003

Happy New Year everybody! Only about one month late. Where the heck has Canard been? Well, the boys spent a weekend down at the beach in December and recorded thirteen tunes—all covers, mostly old country and r & b numbers—for what has come to be known as the "Self Portrait" project (for obvious reasons, no?). Soon after, we had a blast playing at Adam's Graduation Party. In the Ought Three, we've kept it "real" by playing last weekend with Apples in Stereo and Oranger, and will continue to do so this weekend (February 8) when we play at the Beta Bar with Fireplug and the Pat Puckett Band. Come on out to the show if you can, as we'll be sequestering ourselves afterwards to complete the Self Portrait material and record some new stuff!

September 10, 2002

Canard and the Magnetic Band will be performing live, on-the-air, on WVFS' Hootenanny radio show at 10 pm on Monday, September 23. In Tallahasee, FL, that's 89.7 FM, or you can listen from the V89 web site.

The lineup:
Golden Synthetic Songbook (headlining)
Canard
The Cold After

Doors at 10:00. $4.00 for over 21.

Talk to Canard at the show and get your hands on a copy of the new free promo EP, we love you john rutsey, featuring four original tunes from the upcoming LP, plus the boys' take on the Rush classic "Working Man." Hope to see you there!

April 13, 2002

Here's what the Tallahassee Democrat has to say about Canard's debut solo gig next Wednesday:

At noon Wednesday, students get a very rare treat when local odd bird Canard (which means "duck," "malicious lie" or "the horizontal control and stabilizing surfaces in an aircraft," depending on its usage) performs his first-ever solo gig. Expect El Canardo (aka Mike Coleman) to dig into his songbook for tunes by Canard and the Magnetic Band, extremely obscure covers and blasts from the past from defunct local groups Bacon Ray and Singing Spoons.

January 14, 2002

Don't miss Canard's version of the Jerry Butler classic "I Dig You, Baby" on the Sounds Page!!

December 08, 2001

Brent passed onto us an obscure Canard press release from sometime in the 1970s, recently discovered by noted Canard historian "Wicked" Lester Higgenbotham. Higgenbotham claims the validity of the document is in question. See for yourself here.

Message from Brent:

The show with Hank Williams III and Linda Hargrove was great. The vibe was really weird when we pulled up to the new Cow Haus to load in. Everyone was scurrying around trying to get the new club into shape for the show, and nobody seemed to know what the hell was going on. It felt more like an out-of-town show than our usual gig. We settled down when the blinding fluorescent lights went down, and Linda Hargrove played a great set of acoustic country music. By the time we took the stage, a pretty good crowd had arrived, so we got to play for a pretty good number of people, most of whom had never seen nor heard of us...

The crowd seemed to enjoy it, particularly the more countrified numbers at the end of the set. We had a blast. Shortly thereafter Hank Williams III and his band proceeded to whip the crowd into a frenzy with a lethal mix of good ol' honky tonk and metal-tinged punk rock. When it got too hot inside we found the deck out front to be a good place to kick it and still be able to see and hear what was happening onstage. All in all a great evening of music.

Ace Dickie?

September 15, 2001

Hey! Canard here.

What a horrible week. It is hard to even comprehend what happened to our nation this past Tuesday. It almost seems like a dream, a nightmare we can't wake up from. My support and love goes out to anyone touched by this tragedy, and I believe that to be every one of us. Unfortunately, some people have absolutely no qualms about saying some really insensitive shit regarding this work of terrorism. I'm talking about Falwell and Robertson. I honestly cannot believe that the blame for this event falls on homosexuals, feminists and people for American civil liberties. Whatever happened to separation of church and state?!?!? These dorks set our culture back thousands of years. (I believe that, if anything, our lack of strong foreign policy and its vagueness in areas has fueled the ire of some very extreme groups of people.) How can these people say that we have a loving GOD that cares for us and at the same time say that he/it/she/whatever has decided not to protect us because we have CIVIL RIGHTS!!!! I thought Christianity was about forgiveness and loving your enemy, not suppressing people's freedom and individuality. What a couple of perverts!!!!! If you feel like it, go to falwell.com and tell these freaks what bigots they are and how insensitive it is to the victims of these crimes and their families. Shame on those punks. Religion... always willing to lend a helpin' hand!!!!!!

In light of all this crazy shit, I will be playing a benefit show with Flotilla 13 at the Cow Haus on Wednesday night to help raise money for the Red Cross. I suggest Falwell get off his fat ass and do something other than spout hatred. May your God Bless you, our country and our Civil rights!!!!! This is a time when all Americans should unite, not divide!

Canard

August 30, 2001

Looks like the first gig with the Magnetic Band is set for September 22. Look out for several older tunes, plus new ones like "Ocean Würm", "Favorite Spot", and "Just Like Canard's Blues", among others. Canard will probably throw in a surprise cover or two as well.
